Gisborough priory

Prev | Home | Next

Thought it was about time I put this shot up. As you may notice it's the one I'm currently using on the banner at the top.

The priory was founded in 1129 by Robert Bruce, 2nd Lord of Annandale, who was an ancestor of Robert the Bruce. The priory was mainly destroyed during the 'dissolution of the monastries', when King Henry VIII confiscated the property of the monastic institutions in England between 1538 and 1541.

The dismantled stones were used in other buildings in the town, including Saint Nicholas' church. The east end of the Priory was left standing where the large window now forms the distinctive arch. This remaining structure tends to be used as an image heavily associated with the town.

You have a lovely liquid sky to this shot and the history there adds a lot to what has become a town icon, I suppose.
